The things I can be....a deep dive into Psychology

The complexities and nuances of the human brain are indeed fascinating. For centuries, mankind has struggled to comprehend the similarities and differences that seem to distinguish & at the same time, bind us all together. Read on as Psychology student Vaishnavi Sharma, narrates her experience of exploring the field.

I grew up in a country where mental health care is still in many ways not “normalised", and access to quality care is not easy to come by. Ever since I was a young girl, I’ve had a keen interest in the human mind. The question, “Why are people so different from each other?” always kept the spark of pursuing psychology fuelled up in my mind.

As I grew up, the curiosity only seemed to increase. In so many ways, I believe that our society can benefit from using the knowledge learned through the science of psychology, in applying it to the betterment of ourselves and our condition as humankind. Psychology is a dynamic subject as well as a very diverse field. There is both a biological and social aspect, each different but equally important. I find this interaction fascinating. It makes psychology a broad subject which is appealing to me as I am piqued by the vagaries of the subject.

After I completed my 10th grade studies, the question of choosing a path, a stream for achieving my future endeavours, came to my mind. The only thing that I can remember while taking the decision of choosing the humanities stream was my ever growing quest of finding out the answer to my question as a young girl, “How are people different from each other?”. Going forward with my decision, I studied humanities.

In India, there is a stereotype about humanities not being beneficial in future. People always taunted me about it but I did not let it deter my spirit and continued to persevere. I studied the basics of psychology in junior college and will be pursuing a degree in psychology in future. I plan on completing my masters as well as a Ph.D. in psychology.

Psychology is a broad subject and has many departments within it. What are my plans for the future? Well, with a plethora of options available, I’m yet to decide. But after completing my bachelor’s degree in psychology, I can specialise in specific areas such as health, neuro, clinical, educational, research, occupational, counselling, sports and forensic. Depending on the specialisation, the options I will have will be being a : psychologist, psychotherapist, counsellor, social worker, education psychologist, professor. There are also a number of less typical roles for psychology graduates, including jobs in media and creative industries.

As I embark on this journey with so many exciting options at my disposal, I can’t wait to unleash the potential possibilities!
